Sat Nav (along with mobile signal!) can be intermittent in the mountains so we recommend you take a map/printed route as a back up plan! The directions below are a guide, please do not rely on them!

From the South..

Leave the M6 at junction 36 and take the A591 for a short distance, leaving at the A590, following the signs for the Western Lake District.  Leave the A590 at Greenodd/Penny Bridge and take the A5092 towards Broughton-in-Furness and the A595.   At the traffic lights after Broughton, you have two choices.  Option 2 is recommended if it is icy, snowy or foggy as Option 1 is a narrow road across high ground with steep gradients and some tight bends.  It also has stunning views so is recommended in good weather!

Option 1 – turn right (signposted Ulpha).   At this point you leave the traffic (and wide roads!) behind and travel up the Duddon Valley on a windy and hilly narrow road.   After Ulpha, take a left turn towards Wasdale and Eskdale (25% gradient – this is the steepest and windiest bit!) onto the open fell road.  The views are fabulous in good weather and you get a panorama of magnificent Lakeland peaks, including Scafell Pike.   The road drops down into Eskdale.  At the junction at the George IV pub, head straight on, through Eskdale Green village, over another steepish climb and then drop down the hill to Santon Bridge.  You will pass the Bridge Inn on the right.  Hallflat Farm is approximately 200m up the hill on the left.

Option 2 – continue straight through the lights and follow the A595.  You will eventually reach a T junction (the A595 continues right) facing the sea.  Turn right following the signs to Whitehaven.  Continue along the road through a number of villages.  Soon after Ravenglass, turn right (signposted Santon Bridge 2.5m), just before a petrol station.   Continue down the lane for about 2 miles, and at the T junction take a left.  This will take you down the hill to Santon Bridge.  You will pass the Bridge Inn on the right.  Hallflat Farm is approximately 200m up the hill on the left.

From the North..

Leave the M6 at Junction 40 and take the A66 towards Keswick and Workington.    Stay on the A66 until you reach the junction with the A595.   Take the A595 and continue south to the village of Gosforth.  At Gosforth turn left off the A595 and go through Gosforth village.  Just after the village centre, take a right fork towards Santon Bridge.    Continue approximately 3 miles, driving through the hamlet of Santon.    Hallflat Farm is on the right before the road drops down to the Santon Bridge Inn.
